Nursery - Hedgehogs Class
Spring 2 2026
Once Upon a Time
This half-term we have learnt all about characters from stories like dinosaurs, superheroes, pirates and space. We have enjoyed pretending to be these characters and have had themed role-play areas for each week. We have also enjoyed joining in lots of different challenges to do with our topic. We were lucky enough to get some letters from Captain Cookie with lots of different challenges for us. After we completed all the challenges, Captain Cookie sent us on a treasure hunt and we found some treasure!
For space, we loved painting our own solar system! Look how super it is.

We had a special delivery of some eggs at the start of March and loved watching them grow into little chicks. They were so fluffy and cuddly.

For Mother’s Day we had a special morning where a special person came into Hedgehogs Class and played with us. We were doing dinosaurs so our families got to play dinosaurs with us. We loved sharing our classroom with our adults.

How Things Work
This topic was based around the Understanding the World area of learning. We looked at transport, materials, technology and causes and effects, e.g., melting. We also celebrated New Year, Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day. We loved exploring magnets, ice, gloop, soda and vinegar reactions and mixing colours. We also enjoyed finding out how construction vehicles and Beebots work.
For transport week, we made our own boats out of recycling given to us and tried to make our boats float. We experimented with which materials float in the water and talked about whether our boat would hold a person in it without sinking.

For maths this term, we enjoyed making bridges for maths day and safer walls for Humpty Dumpty to sit on! We used a real egg to test our walls.

Autumn 2025
Celebrations and our senses
This half term we have learnt about all the different celebrations, including Diwali, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The children have been able to understand more about how people have different beliefs and celebrate special times in different ways. We have used our senses of taste, touch, hearing, sight and smell to explore these different celebrations.
For Diwali, we looked at the traditions that Hindu worshippers do when they are celebrating. We learnt all about the special food they eat and how they pray to a special God called Ganesh. We learnt the story about Rama and Sita and even had a try at being the different characters.
We particularly enjoyed making our own Diwa lamps from salt dough. We sculpted our lamps into a shape big enough to fit a candle in and then waited for Miss Charles to put them in the oven. Once this was done, we painted them in all different colours and then put a candle in the middle ready to take home.

We loved writing our letters to Santa and telling him all of the things we want for Christmas. We drew pictures to represent our Christmas present wishes and then an adult wrote down our ideas for us. We tried our best to write our names at the bottom of the letters so Santa knew who it was from. We then went with Miss Charles and Miss Clarke to the post box to make sure Santa got our letters in time. We can’t wait for him to send us a letter back!

For Christmas we have made some decorations, cards and calendars to take home to our families. We have also been enjoying lots of Christmas activities in the classroom, including these playdough reindeer. The children had to mould their playdough into the shape of a reindeer before using pebbles for eyes, a bead for the nose and lolly sticks for antlers. These turned out so well!
